The Institute of Linguistics began its operation on October 1, 2019 as a scientific and didactic unit, gathering departments conducting work in many branches of linguistics. Nevertheless, linguistic research has been present at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin for decades. Scientific research conducted by the Institute's employees is based on modern corpus methodologies and is grounded in contemporary theoretical assumptions. It covers all major national language areas: Polish, Slavic, English, Germanic (Dutch and German), Romance (French, Spanish and Italian) as well as Celtic (Irish) and Chinese. In addition to the issues related to individual national languages, the Institute's employees undertake in their research issues from every level of linguistic analysis: phonetics and phonology, semantics, lexis, morphology, syntax, text grammar and broadly understood language pragmatics. Research is also conducted in such sub-disciplines of linguistics as: glottodidactics, acquisition of foreign languages and Polish, contrastive grammar of Polish and European languages, translation as well as historical-comparative and general linguistics. The Institute's employees implement scientific projects as part of grants awarded by domestic and foreign institutions.
Currently, the Institute's staff consists of about seventy members employed in thirteen departments. Most of them belong to the research and teaching group, while several employees are teaching staff. In addition to Polish staff members, the Institute's employees come from several European countries, such as France, Spain, Italy, Great Britain, Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands, which is related to the characteristics of didactic classes and scientific research.
Every year, the Institute's employees organize scientific conferences on a large national and international scale: Linguistics Beyond and Within, an International Dutch Congress, and a biennial conference Approaches to Phonology and Phonetics. The Institute also maintains important scientific journals that have reached the level approved by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education: LingBaW and several issues of the Roczniki Humanistyczne (Annals of Arts), a journal which can boast one of the highest scores in the country.
As part of the didactic offer of the Faculty of Humanities, the Institute of Linguistics, together with the Institute of Literary Studies, runs twelve study programmes:

The Institute's employees also undertake a number of cultural and social initiatives and implement a number of projects with external bodies: thanks to the efforts of the Institute's employees, KUL is, among others, an accredited Examination Centre of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the University of Perugia.
